Evaluation Part 6

For some reason my slideshare isn't working... so he's just a hard block of text version!

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have used a lot of technology on this project, from USB memory sticks, cameras, e-mail, Google search engine, blackboard, Microsoft word and PowerPoint. All the way up to things that I hadn’t used before this project such as blogger, slideshare, prezi, Adobe Photoshop CS3, and survey monkey.

Undoubtedly the biggest thing that I learnt, was how to properly use Photoshop, I had used other programs that were similar to Photoshop but never the actual program. The amount that I used Photoshop to actually create my magazine was much more than I had ever used. I’m particularly happy with the way that I’ve used the various editing tools and filters to edit my pictures to help them suit my designs.

Another thing that I have learnt to use over this project is the online presentation site, www.prezi.com, which I had never heard of before I started the project! It’s a whole new take on presentations, and took me a while to get my head round, thankfully I managed to get the hang of it and use it for a couple of parts of my evaluation.

Then there’s blogger, I had never used a blogging site before but it’s been pretty easy to get to grips with the site. I’ve found it a good way of organising my project and would probably use it again for any other projects.

Websites such as survey monkey and slideshare were also new to me. They were pretty easy to learn how to work them, as the websites are pretty self explanatory, so overall I’ve learnt to use a lot of technology to help improve my product, without them, I wouldn’t have a reliable survey, a place to show my work, or without Photoshop, possibly not even a magazine!

Photographs

Here are the finished photos that I will be using in my magazine. As you can see I have taken photos from the plans I have posted earlier in my blog, I have also take a few more photos to fit my designs. Due to a lack in models, I am in a couple of photos myself, however I did set up the shot myself without any assistance, using models used in other photos to set the shot exactly how I wanted it before I posed for the shot, with a friend taking the photo with the camera from where I’d positioned it.

These two photos above will be modified in Adobe Photoshop CS3 to make them look as if they were taken from a live gig. I had said in my plans that I wanted to have photos in my magazine taken of bands performing at live gigs. However, this option was unavailable to me, due to the time constraints I had to complete the task. So I thought I take photos of people performing in a different location and make use of Photoshop’s array of picture editing tools to try and give the illusion of a live performance.

I have chosen this above photo to be in black and white by using the picture editing tools that are available using Adobe Photoshop CS3. I have chosen to use black and white photos, to follow pre-exsisting conventions used in rock music magazines. It’s also makes the photo match my colour scheme of black, white, red and blue making it look more professional.

Planned Photography

Here are my plans for my photography. My magazine will follow common rock magazine conventions and contain a mixture of posed shots in specific locations and photos which have been taken at live gigs and/or in a recording studio when the band is either recording/rehearsing. I have included four quick computerised sketches to show a few examples of the types of photos that I will aim to include. They include a couple of posed shots with people holding/playing guitar, someone smashing a guitar up, and an empty recording studio, with no band but with the instruments set-up ready to use. The picture of smashing the guitar up shows off the stereotypical rock and roll life style, the carefree attitude and rebellious streak that rock music and many rock stars have.

Double Page Spread Article

Below is my article that I have written for my magazine's double page spread. It is an interview with a band who are soon to release a new album. I have tried to be very informal with my article to help my target demographic relate to the band and feel "closer" to them. I have followed exsisting rock magazine conventions by leaving in any swearwords that occured during the fictional "interview", this fits the idea of rock music being "rebellious"

Double Page Spread Article:

SW: After many weeks of rumours circulating round the internet, 3 Day Challenge finally put us out of our misery by telling the world via the bands Facebook page that their new album is almost ready to hit the stores.

This is great news for fans, most of whom are still rocking out to the big tracks that featured on the two-piece’s self titled debut album, the distinctive sound making them a highlight at festivals around the country. As a writer of Soundwave magazine of course I felt honour-bound to our loyal readers to go over to their studio and see what’s going on.

....

Right, I’m here at a recording studio in Leeds with 3 Day Challenge, it all sounds pretty awesome as they just finish recording some guitar riffs before taking a quick break on the sofa to talk to us.

So Rob, Craig, looks like you’ve been busy, everything’s happened so quickly for you.

R: Yeah, it’s really taken off. I mean the first album was recorded in Craig’s loft so we had quite a few interruptions as you could imagine, so this is quite a different experience for us.

SW: Sounds like there’s a few interesting stories to tell there?

R: “Well there was the day we walked in to find that some pigeons had got into the roof. They were all flapping about and there was bird shit all over the drum kit.

C: Is he allowed to say things like that

SW: I thought it was more rock and roll to swear all the time?

C: Well, he swears all the time. It pisses me right off sometimes

SW: Well guys, let’s talk music, second studio album. I heard a bit earlier on, it sounds brilliant and a little bit different to your last one.

R: Yeah it’s a slightly new sound, I never like using the term new sound, as it puts a lot of fans off, but this is a bit different. Not too different! You can still definitely tell it’s a 3 Day Challenge album, there’s just the odd synth line dropped in here and there.

S: Yeah we haven’t completely sold ourselves out!

SW: Well that’s good to hear, so you guys have had a busy summer, you played a lot of the big festivals, how was that for you?

C: It was pretty awesome to think 18 months ago we were stuck in Leeds playing the same venue. Suddenly you’re playing in front thousands of people.

R: Yeah, thankfully we played quite late most of the time so they were all too drunk to care about whether the music was crap or not.

SW: Do you guys like to sneak into the crowd at festivals, or prefer to watch from backstage?

C: It’s all about being in the crowd; thankfully we’re not big enough yet to be recognised so we get away with sneaking in to soak up some atmosphere.

R: You find some right nutters as well, which is always a bonus.

S: Yeah it’s definitely the nutters that make music festivals, they’re a bit weird but it wouldn’t be the same without them.
SW: Ok, so last question, I’m going to put you on the spot, describe the new album in one word.

C: Errr... Punchy? Yeah I’ll go with that.

SW: And you rob?

R: Epic. Laughs

SW: Well I can’t wait! I’m gonna go now and let you two guys get back to recording and I hope to hear these rocking tunes soon.
So there we have it, the lads from 3 Day Challenge, working hard on their second album. Fans can look forward to some new “Punchy”, experimental and of course, “epic” tracks. These guys totally rock and are taking the world by storm at the moment, this album is definitely one to this album is definitely one to have in your collection!

Final Layout

After recieving my feedback on my style sheet and flat plans, I decided to make a couple of changes to my flat pans. This is the flat plans of my final layout, mocked up with the colour schemes and the fonts that will be used on the actual magazine.
